Albany mayoral race is “historic”
Albany’s Chief City Auditor Dorcey Applyrs, 43, will be the city’s first Black Democratic mayoral nominee, and if history holds, will become the first Black mayor in the city’s history, a story in the Times Union says.
The T-U also has a primary election page open to all readers, without a paywall.
Schenectady county conservatives choose Hess and Cuomo
Schenectady County Legislators Josh Cuomo and Eric Hess won the Conservative Party line for re-election to the county board, over challengers Kate Kruk and Benjamin Yauchier in Tuesday’s Conservative primary election, the Daily Gazette is reporting. Cuomo received 285 votes; Hess, 251; Kruk, 82; Yauchier, 73. The four will face again since Kruk and Yauchier are already on the Democratic ballot lines for the November general election.
Mamdani wins in NYC over Cuomo
Andrew Cuomo conceded. Just 80 minutes after the polls closed on primary election night. The former New York governor gave up the Democratic primary election to the lesser-know New York State Assemblyman Zohran Mamdani who held 43.5% of the ranked-choice votes cast to Cuomo’s 36.4%, the New York Times is reporting. The vote is not official since the rank-choice voting requires a candidate to reach 50% of the vote. The city will run through the machinations that likely will draw votes from other ballots and push Mamdani over the top, the story says.
At this hour: Traffic, weather and the markets
Weather
The heat wave is over, the National Weather Service’s Albany office says. The high today will reach about 88 degrees and showers may roll in after 1 p.m. The service is predicting the most rain on — you guessed it — Saturday. They give a 70% chance for rain then. The temperatures are trending into the 70s this week.
Traffic
At this hour — about 7 a.m.: Washington Street in Saratoga Springs at the railroad overpass, traffic is slow. Also, construction work is slowing traffic on U.S. Route 9 in Wilton, just north of Saratoga Springs.
Premarket trading
The Dow, S&P500 and NASDAQ stock indices are up (or down) by very small percentages in premarket trading, according to numbers from Marketwatch.
Judge: Interim tries for permanent
Interim U.S. Attorney John A. Sarcone III will appear before a panel of federal judges in New York’s Northern District on Friday, where he will make his case to become the permanent judge, the Times Union is reporting. He touts the support of many police and district attorneys in his bid though he drew ire from the Albany police force when he accused them of lying down on the job, the story says.
Saratoga Hospital welcomes new spine care
