Its classic “PBJ,” bright blue “Galaxy Glazed,” and very Saratoga ‘Death Wish Coffee” flavors have won over legions of local fans — and now this downtown hot spot is enjoying time in the national spotlight.
Darling Doughnuts is so popular that the small morning sweets shop on Broadway’s official hours are 8 a.m. until “sold out.” And those morning treats that often warrant a line out the door have just been named the fourth “Best Donut Shop” by a national reader’s poll produced by 10Best and USA Today.
“With a rotating menu of flavors, Darling Doughnuts features quite an eclectic mix of handcrafted donuts,” reads the June article. “Think caramel stroopwafel, Kel lime, and honeycomb donuts. Want to take it up a notch? Try a doughrogie, pierogi donuts with gooey fillings like chocolate ganache, chopped apples and cinnamon, or lemon curd.”
While the winners are chosen by a reader’s poll — we have no doubt that Darling’s drool-worthy Instagram game helped — nominees are curated by an “expert panel.”
Overall, for the Best Donut Shop category, voters were on the lookout for “unique charm and personal touch that large chains often can’t match.”
In 2024, Darling came in seventh place, so it is moving on up. Beating out the sinful Saratoga bakery: No. 3 Bakery Unlimited in Winterset, Iowa; No. 2 City Donut in Orange Beach, Alabama; and No. 1 Donald’s Donuts in Zanesville, Ohio.
