The best restaurants change their menus seasonally, but while that’s great for so many reasons, it makes it that much harder for gluten-free diners to keep up with their options. That’s why The Dispatch called in the top local expert, Saratoga’s Maura Postlethwait — who’s made a name of herself in Saratoga as the Gluten-Free Concierge. The celiac advocate and food & wine content creator has chosen six favorite gluten-free dishes, many that are brand-new to summer menus. How many have you tried?
Best Meal: Bolognese & Limoncello Olive Oil Cake from Solevo
Solevo doesn’t make gluten-free pasta, but Postlethwait says you won’t even miss it. “The flavor of the bolognese is that good,” she says. “It’s served over polenta, and they have a full gluten-free menu to guide you.” The best part about not filling up on pasta: more room for dessert. “Don’t skip the Limoncello Olive Oil Cake,” she says, “served with homemade whipped cream.”
Best Gluten-Free Pizza: Mama Mia’s, a Local Favorite
“It’s nothing fancy, but they have the best gluten-free crust in town,” says the influencer. “You can only get cheese or pepperoni, as the other toppings are not considered safe — this is clearly noted on the menu.” She did warn that this pizza is not for those who can’t have pizza baked in the same oven as the gluten varieties. “They do cook the pizza on a separate pan,” she assures, “and use separate utensils.”
Best Pasta Dish: Osteria Danny
When gluten-free diners have a craving for pasta, Posthlethwait says to head straight to Danny’s. “Most of the pasta dishes can be made gluten-free,” she says. “When I last visited, they had a pistachio pesto on special that was incredible. I added sausage for protein— it was the perfect combo.”
Best Takeout Option: Sara’s Kitchen
Sara’s Kitchen has a gluten-free fryer, and even a gluten-free press for the gyros. “So you can enjoy gluten-free pita, and I love the chicken shawarma hot plate,” says the experienced foodie and food writer. “Don’t skip the LimonNana drink, a refreshing homemade lime and mint beverage.”
Best Sandwich To-Go: The Catharine from Putnam Market
The market’s popular Catharine includes free-range turkey, cheddar, bacon, avocado, sprouts and Russian dressing. “They prepare it separately to keep it safe and clearly mark it with ‘GF,’” she says. “Hal’s chips are also gluten free.”
Best Ice Cream to Beat the Heat: Familiar Creature
Be sure to save room for soft serve at Familiar Creature. “The flavor changes monthly; right now, it’s strawberry shortcake,” says the celiac content creator. “Remember the Good Humor bars? It’s that same comforting flavor. Let your server know you have Celiac, and they’ll omit any cake or shortbread pieces.”
