Red, white and raceday
Our coverage in The Dispatch: For the first time, Saratoga’s July 4th celebration fuses family fun, fireworks — and the opening of the Spa. The fun includes a lot for kids, families and adults. The city is looking to July 4, the opening of the track meet and the 250th celebration of the country’s independence as a reason to celebrate!
From the Daily Gazette: The Firecracker 4 Road Race at 9 a.m. in downtown Saratoga. There is also a 0.2-mile children’s Sparkler Fun Race at 8:15 a.m.
Blue Streak is not paying, investors say
Blue Streak racing owner is bilking his investors, they say. A trainer working for owner Tim McCoy who created Blue Streak in 2017 and dissolved it late last year says she is owed back money, according to a story in the Daily Gazette. An email cited in the story McCoy had to dissolve the company as his “real” job moved him to Ireland and that some investors would likely lose money in the dissolution.
Trump’s plan will hurt North Country, Gov. says
Gov. Kathy Hochul, a Democrat, filled the Harrietstown Town Hall, and spoke against federal policies, the One Big Beautiful Bill Act before Congress, according to a story in the Times-Union. Among those present: Retired Republican State Sen. Betty Little, Hudson Headwaters Chief Medical Officer William Borgos, and others. The rally focused on the affect immigration policies are having on farming, the affect of tariffs against Canada are having on the economy, and the potential cuts to Medicaid. One-in-three people in the North Country rely on the federal, low-income health insurance program. Harriesttown, near the Saranac Lakes, is deep in the 21st District of U.S. Rep. Elise Stefanik. The paper says she did not return a call for comment. (Editor’s note: The story went to print earlier than the Senate vote, apparently. The Senate passed their version of the bill over the weekend, and they will have to confer with the House of Representatives before delivering the bill to Trump’s desk.)

Can-Am trade talks back on
Trade talks between the United States and Canada are back on, after Canada rescinded its plan to tax U.S. technology firms. On Friday, President Donald Trump had said he was suspending the talks because of the tech tax. The Canadian government said "in anticipation" of a trade deal "Canada would rescind" the Digital Serves Tax. The tax was set to go into effect Monday, according to an Associated Press story on the WAMC radio station web site. The digital services tax was due to hit big tech companies with a 3% levy on revenue from Canadian users.
