An apparent water leak in the upper floors of the Washington Building at 424 Broadway in Saratoga Springs has closed the popular Northshire Bookstore on the main floor. The store has been closed since the holiday weekend.
The reopening is still unclear, officials say. The company has another location in Manchester Center, Vermont.
“Northshire Bookstore’s Saratoga location experienced flooding in the early morning hours on July 4, apparently caused by an upper floor unit in the Washington building,” Scott Austin, the bookstore’s chief operating officer, emailed the Dispatch.
“While we don’t yet have a reopening date, we are working expeditiously to reopen as soon as possible and thank our incredible customers for their patience and support,” he wrote.
In the short time that a reporter spent outside the front doors talking to manager Nancy Scheemaker, (pronounced “ski-maker”) at least a couple other people and families swung by looking to enter.
Scheemaker apologized to one family that was clearly disappointed, but they’d make the best of it, they said, and take their preschoolers to the carousel in Congress Park.
Austin wrote that book lovers can find more information, especially about the reopening, on their website northshire.com and on social media.
The Dispatch will have updates once the situation changes.
